Michael Barthel is a PhD student (ABD) in the department of communication at the University of Washington, where his research primarily addresses institutional trust and the new media landscape. His dissertation examines the relationship between trust in government and trust in media over the past 40 years. He is also a freelance journalist, and currently writes a weekly column on politics and the internet for Salon.com.
