Katie Bird is an Assistant Professor of digital media production and film studies at The
University of Texas at El Paso in the department of Communication. She holds degrees in Film
Production as well as Cultural Studies and completed her PhD in Film and Media Studies at the
University of Pittsburgh. Katie has published and has forthcoming articles on historical below-the-
line craft labor in The Velvet Light Trap, The Spectator, and The Journal for Cinema and Media Studies. She
is currently completing a book manuscript Embodied Hollywood: How Craft Workers Made Their Labor
Matter to the Movies, 1919–1985 which explores technical film production workers’ craft histories and
embodied film theories. This videographic project originated at the Scholarship for Sound and
Image workshop at Middlebury College in 2017.
