Links to Peter Stults's "What If" posters
I missed the Gocharov media at the time, but the trend seems to build on things like Peter Stults's What If film posters (starting around 2010/2011: https://www.behance.net/PeterStults) and some of which also made films-within-films their focal point ... -
An organised use of Instagram feature
A very interesting analysis! One thing that strikes me from it is that Wang's use of Instagram makes good use of its (evolving) features: coherent 'stories', pinned posts, tagged stories, and superimposed captions. Her use of it feels more ... -
"Clueless academic"
Thanks, Jilly, for highlighting how quickly people moved to analysing the Beard example from the perspective of social media misogyny, disregarding the significance of the televisual origins. That said, looking at how Beard is described in that YouTube bl ... -
Hearing Bonnie in the final episode
Thanks, Anna. I agree that her single scream in that climatic scene is crucial. I would say that her singing performance earlier in that final episode is another key moment in terms of her voice being amplified (and that it's something of a precursor ... -
A negative chorus effect
I love your point about female audiences' using the women's on-screen refusals as inspiration for real-life interactions. So often the focus is on how spectators copy the appearance of characters/film stars, with their influence as verbal role-m ... -
'Indie' Bass
Thanks, Keith. I agree: The Shining example suggests that Bass enjoyed creating many, varied designs for their own sake-- as an expressive process-- so I imagine he would have a very full digital profile (and lots of viral, if not commercial, success). ... -
Rival cats in Brussels
Thanks for an interesting post. I wasn’t aware of the ISIS cats but, on the other side, the Brussels lockdown cats received a lot of attention last November: http://edition.cnn.com/2015/11/23/europe/paris-attacks-brussels-lockdown.... To your knowledge, w ... -
Pathos / Catharsis
Great post, Kathleen. I like your description of these posters as turning cinema into ‘a never-ending circuit’. The idea that the films in these posters have ‘denied futures’ is also interesting: there seems to be a certain pathos to ‘What If’ posters, in ... -
Motivations for anticipatory posters
The lead-time you observe here in relation to Avengers: Infinity War – Part I (not due for release for 2 years) seems very long. How soon is too soon to start creating such materials? Presumably, fans must exhaust their own enthusiasm at some point! In te ... -
A collector's perspective...
Thanks, Matthew. It's great to hear things from the perspective of a collector, and to learn that there's a documentary on the way. It's worrying how few filmmakers seem to have influence over the promotional materials; or, at least, it ...
