Looking Back: Watson's "Gamification: Don't Say It, Don't Do It, Just Stop" (Sept 2013- How does gamification affect learning?)

Yesterday, we revisited Jamie Henthorn's article on community and collaboration as relates to gaming apps. Today, we'll revisit a very different take on gamification and learning. Jeff Watson's response to the past survey on the potential for gamification's impact on learning is, well, less enthusiastic but thoughtful just the same: "Make no mistake: gamification — for we must differentiate it from game design proper, else the term is meaningless — is a credentialing system, and while it sometimes poses as a way of honoring and acknowledging informal learning, what it really amounts to is an extension of the formal into the realm of the informal."
