As the outgoing Online Editor of Cinema Journal, I’ve been invited by In Media Res to offer a retrospective look back on five years of In Focus posts shared here. The CJ-IMR partnership began in 2013, as Will Brooker took over as the journal’s editor and expressed a desire to generate more dialogue across the print edition, its new online satellites, and the academic and public sphere. As Will explains in this excerpt from a recent Aca-Media interview after I asked him to reflect back on his (and Associate Editor Anna Froula’s) era of Cinema Journal, In Focus is one of a handful of places within the print journal where the editor’s own personality and interests can shine through. Further, In Focus has always offered a vital space within the print journal for responsive and rigorous discussion of timely issues in cinema and media studies. Accordingly, we recognized in Media Commons and the In Media Res platform an ideal online companion for In Focus. Will and I especially valued In Media Res as an outlet that would accommodate multimedia additions to In Focus essays, as well as offer the potential for interactive conversation that isn’t possible in print form. Admittedly, the comments sections of In Focus posts on IMR weren’t always as voluminous as we hoped they would be. But after sifting through the many posts this partnership has produced, I am impressed and pleased with how many rich and varied perspectives we’ve been able to share via posts that will be searchable and discoverable for generations to come. With that in mind, I’m excited to deliver to In Media Res readers this week a handful of previous posts that I think illustrate the ideals of the CJ-IMR partnership in terms in offering food for thought on complex issues from diverse perspectives and the potential for dynamic dialogue. And this also gives everyone a second chance to add comments to these posts. Join in on the dialogue, everyone!
