I received my doctorate in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2015, with a dissertation on the aesthetics and politics of commercial performing arts in prewar Okinawa, Japan. I have also carried out research on histories of perception in mainland Japan and Southeast Asia, leading to a number of refereed publications. My interests include materialism, critical theory, political economy and ecology, historical ethnomusicology, and the interplay between traditional and experimental music-cultures.
