Jennifer Zaylea works with sound design and installation as a foundation for her creative practice. Her work is uniquely tactile yet designed using various forms of technology. The ethereal pull of the aural experience dictates the physical form each work. The works resulting form manifests in many mediums including experimental drawn scores, sound installations involving glass, multimodal poetry and even glitch video with an accompanying sound design. Her works draws upon sounds ability to generate both common social responses and personal experiences. Jennifer appreciates that her work has the ability to be sonically experienced and recalled after visiting the exhibition space. Jennifer earned her MFA from The San Francisco Art Institute in the Design + Technology program where she was awarded the Montana Artists Refuge Residence Award. She has an MA in Studio Arts - emphasis on installation art - from California State University - Sacramento, where she earned the Increase Robins Memorial Fellowship Award. Her work has been featured in many exhibitions, including collaborative works with the Los Angeles based group Ultra Red and a recent solo show at EyeDrum Gallery in Atlanta. She has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento, CA. In addition to being a maker, Jennifer recently curated a mixed media and film exhibition, Ostranenie, for Aggregate Space Gallery in Oakland, CA. Jennifer is an active participant in the University Video and Film Association, serving as a Board member and a contributing member, presenting new media works and papers. She is also an active member in the Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory (HASTAC), the Association of Sound Designer’s and the Modern Language Association. Jennifer is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.
