As a critical/cultural researcher formally trained in film production, my interests remain wrapped up in examining the contradictory relationship between Hollywood industrial practices and indie film ideology, normative messages with subversive intent, the discursive power of the sensational image, institutional forces and individual identity, and popular cultural representation of gender, sexuality, class, ability, nationality, ethnicity, and race. Ryan has previous experience working on independent/corporate film projects, the Austin Film Festival, and currently teaches Communication & Popular Culture at Denver University.
